Appreciating What We Have...
There is a familiar truth
that visits almost everyone
at some point in life:
We often do not fully appreciate
what we have until it is no longer there.
We may take our health for granted
until illness reminds us
what a miracle it is to move freely
sleep peacefully, breathe easily
and live without pain.
We may take a loved one for granted
until distance, silence, or loss
makes us long for the very voice
presence, or kindness
we once assumed
would always be there.
We may take a peaceful home
for granted until conflict, change
or instability reminds us
what a blessing it is to feel safe.
We may take time for granted
until we realize how quickly
years have passed
how children have grown
how opportunities have faded
and how many moments we thought
we could return to — but cannot.
We may take occupations for granted
until we lose our purpose
or sense of usefulness.
We may take friendship for granted
until someone stops calling, moves away
or quietly gives up trying.
We may take freedom for granted
until it is restricted.
We may take nature for granted
until trees are cut down
skies are polluted
waters are poisoned
or the melody of singing birds
disappears.
We may even take ourselves for granted —
our talents, intuition, resilience, creativity
and capacity to love —
until life forces us to remember
who we truly are.
Perhaps the deeper lesson
is not to live in fear of losing what we love
but to awaken while we still have it.
To say thank you now.
To speak the loving words now.
To notice the ordinary miracles now.
To care for our bodies, our relationships
our homes, our gifts, and our planet
before absence becomes the teacher.
Gratitude does not prevent change or loss
but it transforms the way we live
with what is present.
And when we learn to appreciate
what we have while we still have it
life itself becomes more sacred.
Wishing you a lifetime of fully valuing things before you lose them!
With love, smiles & hugs,
Gene
